Most books describe, that juvenile Ribbon Eels are all black, males are blue with a yellow dorsal fin and females change to a nearly all yellow color, but usually with blue in the posterior. While diving the blue color phase is most commonly encountered, the black color phase is observed sometimes and yellow individuals are very rarely seen - actually I have seen them just twice in over 1000 dives (see photos above)! According to new scientific research the blue ribbon eels are female, the black male and the yellow ribbon eels older females. This would more readily explain the scarcity of yellow individuals.

In den meisten Büchern steht, dass die Jungtiere der Geistermuränen schwarz, die Männchen blau und die Weibchen gelb sind. Während des Tauchens sieht man jedoch vor allem die blauen Geistermuränen, manchmal auch schwarze Tiere aber die gelben Geistermuränen sind äusserst selten - ich habe beispielsweise während über 1000 Tauchgängen nur zweimal eine gesehen (siehe Fotos oben)! Gemäss neuen wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen sind die blauen Geistermuränen Weibchen, die schwarzen Tiere Männchen und gelbe Tiere ältere Weibchen. Dies würde erklären, weshalb man vor allem blaue Geistermuränen findet.
